Owensboro, Ky. – The UW-Parkside baseball team matched last season's win total with 12 games remaining by sweeping a doubleheader from Kentucky Wesleyan College. The Rangers led every inning on Saturday in earning 8-1 and 4-1 victories.
The Rangers excelled in all three facets of the game in taking two from the Panthers. The pitching staff allowed just two runs while the defense played error-free baseball. That combined with early offense led to an impressive display at Panther Park.
Parkside improved to 15-24 overall and 8-18 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. KWC is now 14-24 and 8-16 in the league. The two teams will lock up again on Sunday for another twinbill.
Game One (
Box Score)
The Rangers wasted no time taking control of Saturday's action. They scored two first inning runs and never looked back behind a strong performance from
Ryan Windt.
Corey Stonelake walked with one out and moved to second when
Chris Glynn was hit by a pitch. A Panther error allowed Stonelake to score and put two on. Glynn and
Taylor Nehls then executed a double steal, with Glynn taking home, for a 2-0 lead.
They kept their foot on the peddle scoring twice again in the second.
Eric Abel doubled and was brought home on a hit by
Ben Korman. Stonelake then singled in Korman after a stolen base to make it 4-0.
Mike Anderson added to the lead with a run-scoring hit in the fifth. He drove in Glynn who had singled and stole second, one of six stolen bases for the Rangers in the first game.
It stayed 5-0 until the sixth when the Rangers all but put the game away.
John Brennan's two-out triple plated Korman who had reached with a single. Stonelake them put the exclamation mark on the game with a two-run home run to give Parkside an 8-0 lead.
Windt lost his shutout in the bottom of the inning on a two-out hit. All told, he went eight innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He walked five and struck out five while stranding eight Panthers on base.
Josh Geiger tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to end the game.
The Rangers out-hit KWC 11-5 in the game with Brennan, Stonelake, Glynn, and Korman each getting two. Those four also combined to score seven of the runs and drive in five.
Game Two (
Box Score)
Once again the Rangers jumped early with a first inning run. Brennan singled to lead-off the game and promptly stole second. Stonelake then sacrificed him to third. A passed ball allowed Brennan to score and establish and early lead.
Parkside added two more in the third on RBI's by Stonelake and Glynn.
Kirk Haviland, who went 3-for-3 in the second game, scored on Stonelake's at-bat.
Leading 3-0, the Rangers tacked on a big insurance run in the sixth.
Anderson doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a ground out by Abel. Haviland then brought him in with a base-hit for a 4-0 cushion.
Mike Nicks made it stick allowing a run in the ninth but no more damage. He tossed his seventh complete game of the season, leaving him one shy of the single-season program record. On Saturday he went all seven innings allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Aside from Haviland's big game, Brennan also provided two hits and two runs scored.
