Baseball Earns Another Split Against #22 Winona State

Cody Gilles had two hits in the Rangers win Saturday night against Winona
Minneapolis, Minn.- The UW-Parkside baseball team split another doubleheader with 22nd-ranked Winona State University late Saturday night at the Metrodome. The Rangers took the opener 5-3, before losing the series finale, 6-1. The two teams split four games over the opening weekend series.

Game 1 (Box Score)
Winona struck first with two runs in the second inning off Ranger starter, Andy Stochl. A two-run double by Brett Young got the Warriors on the board after a walk and hit by pitch.

Parkside answered immediately and flipped the lead scoring three runs in the bottom half. Cody Gill es singled and Taylor Nehls walked to start the frame. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Kirk Haviland laced a double to drive in both runners and knot the score at two.

Eric Abel sacrificed him over and Mike Anderson followed with a run-scoring single, giving the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

Stochl found some trouble in the fourth as two hits and a walk loaded the bases. But he came up big, coaxing a groundout from Lucas Warren to get out of trouble.

The Warriors did come back the next inning to tie it and chase Stochl. Two walks and a error loaded the bases with no one. Jacob Chandler was able to come in and limit Winona to just one run by striking out two and getting Young on a grounder to get out of the jam with the score tied.

John Brennan spearheaded a go-ahead rally in the bottom of the fifth with a walk to start the inning. He went all the way to third on a single by Chris Glynn and scored on a sac fly from Corey Stonelake.

They would add an insurance run in the sixth on a sac fly by Anderson.

From there Chandler took over retiring the side in the seventh for the win. In all he pitched three innings allowing only a single walk to earn the victory.

Gilles and Anderson each had two hits to lead the offensive attack.

Game 2 (Box Score)
The Warriors led from start-to-finish in game two, putting a runner in scoring position in each of the first six innings as they opened up a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile Winona starter Bradon Verthein held the Rangers hitless through 5 1/3 before getting on the board in the sixth.

Brennan walked to start the inning and stole second. After a Glynn fly out, Stonelake delivered the first hit of the game, and RBI-single, to end the no-hitter and make it 6-1.

Abel added a hit and stolen base in the seventh but that was all the offense Parkside could muster.

The team will now prepare for a weekend trip to Missouri-St. Louis for non-conference contests this weekend. The Tritons and Rangers are scheduled for four games in Missouri with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
