Indianapolis- The UW-Parkside Baseball team suffered two tough losses on Sunday in Indianapolis. The Rangers allowed three unearned runs in game one before falling, 4-2. In the nightcap they let a six-run lead slip away and suffered a 14-12 defeat. The losses push Parkside to 7-9 in the GLVC while Indianapolis improves to 11-7.
Game One
Parkside manufactured a run in the opening inning to take the lead.
Mike Anderson walked, was bunted to second, and moved to third on a fly ball. With two outs he came across on a wild pitch and the Rangers were on the board without the benefit of a hit.
Unfortunately multiple defensive miscues allowed the Greyhounds to take the lead. Indy scored a single run in each of the next four innings, three of which were unearned. The Rangers committed four errors on the game leading to those unearned tallies.
Parkside got its' other run in the fourth on a sac fly by
Robert Bellish to plate
Corey Stonelake. The Rangers got just two base runners over the final three innings and were unable to mount a late rally.
John Olson was solid in defeat going all six innings allowing just one earned run on eight hits and no walks. Stonelake led the bats going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Game Two
The Rangers wasted no time in their attempt to claim the weekend series. They scored four runs in the opening inning to seize the early lead.
Anderson led off the game with a double and promptly stole third.
John Brennan knocked him in with a sac fly for the first run. Stonelake and
Dave Lojeski followed with back-to-back singles and
Kirk Haviland reached on an error to load the bases.
Taylor Schwarz then delivered a two-run hit and made it 3-0. Bellish completed the scoring in the frame with a two-out hit.
Indy got one back in the bottom half thanks to another Parkside error but the Rangers' offense got right back on the horse.
Anderson started another rally with a single and moved to third thanks to another stolen base and an errant throw. Brennan made it count with a single to center to push the lead back to four. Despite Brennan being picked off, they weren't done in the second.
Stonelake doubled to the gap to chase Indy starter, Patrick Craft. Lojeski welcomed reliever, JaVaun West to the game with a booming home run to put the Rangers up by six.
Indy continued the scoring binge getting four of their own in the second on just two hits to make it 7-5. Parkside pitchers hit three batters and walked another in the inning to assist in the scoring.
Parkside got two more in the fourth as Lojeski pounded his second home run of the game. The lead was short-lived however as the Greyhounds tied it with four runs in their next at-bat. Indy took their first lead with two more runs in the fifth.
Lojeski drove in his fifth run of the game in the sixth to make it a one run game. But as was the case all game, Indy was able to match the scoring with a run of their for a 12-10 lead. They would add two more in the seventh to push their lead to four.
The Rangers rallied in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. Stonelake knocked in two runs with a double to make it 14-12. But Donovan Drake got a strike out and popup to end the game and complete the Sunday sweep.
Parkside out-hit the Greyhounds 21 to 15 in game two. Stonelake and Lojeski each had four hits while Anderson, Bellish, and Brennan had three. The top four hitters in the lineup went 14-for-21 with 11 runs scored and nine RBI.
The Rangers will be back in action Wednesday when they head to Madison to take on Edgewood College. They'll return home next weekend for a four-game series with Kentucky Wesleyan College.
