th-ranked Rangers battled down in southern Florida but fell short, 66-58, against Rollins College on Saturday afternoon. The UW-Parkside women's basketball team faced yet another difficult opponent in Rollins who held a double-digit lead Friday before falling to Clayton State University, the defending Division II National Champions. The Tars received votes in the preseason poll and are picked to win their conference.
The Rangers put together a few late runs but were unable to come all the way back in dropping to 1-1 on the young season.
Despite the Rangers outperforming the Tars in the box score categories of field goals, field goal percentage, and total rebounds, the women fell short. The Rangers shot 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field in comparison to 19-of-54 (35.2%) for Rollins College. They also out-rebounded the Tars, 43-40.
Even though the Rangers led many statistical categories the turnover battle haunted them at the end of the game. The Rangers finished with 15 turnovers in comparison to nine for Rollins.
Amy Selk led all scorers with 20 points and brought down nine rebounds.
Brittany Beyer, fresh of her 37 point outburst on Friday, had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Jadee Rooney added 13 points.
The Tars took control near the end of the first half and went into the break with a 31-17 lead. Rollins was about to build that lead to 21 points with 9:13 remaining in the second half.
The Rangers late run fell short despite outscoring Rollins 26-13 over the final eight-plus minutes. The Rangers got within seven points with :37 left in the game behind a late surge led by Beyer and Rooney. The duo scored all 24 points in the final seven minutes of play.
The efforts of Beyer and Rooney were not enough as the Rangers had to play against the clock by committing numerous fouls in hopes of overcoming their deficit.
Kaitlyn Bettiga fouled out as a result to their comeback.
The Rangers will return home this week with their home opener against Saginaw Valley State University (MI). Tipoff will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday November 19
th.
