Box Score
The UW-Parkside women's soccer was forced to go to overtime for the fifth time in sixth matches but
Kristen Benson made sure the regular season would end on a high note. The senior scored 4:55 into the first overtime session to give the Rangers a 3-2 win over Lewis University. The victory secured the third seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer tournament. The Rangers will host Southern Indiana in a quarterfinal match Sunday at noon.
Parkside finishes the regular season 11-2-2 with the win. The Rangers entered the day with a chance to move up to the second seed but Bellarmine's tie against Northern Kentucky relegated UWP to a best case scenario of finishing in third place. Lewis, who was eliminated from tournament contention earlier in the day ends the season at 6-8-1 in GLVC play.
Things started off relatively slow on Wednesday evening with each team getting just two shots in the first 23 minutes. From that point on, however, business picked up quickly.
Stephanie Barsuli got the Rangers on the board first when she scored her seventh goal of the year in the 26
th minute. Lewis goalkeeper, Arianna Nie attempted to play the Parkside cross but mishandled it allowing Barsuli to finish it off for the 1-0 lead.
The Flyers answered back almost immediately with the tying goal just one minute and 41 seconds later. Shelley Hadlock scored on a bouncing ball in front of the net to quickly get things back to even.
The match wouldn't remain tied for long as Parkside responded less than six minutes later to recapture the lead. This time it was the school's all-time leading scorer,
Shannon Becker who fired one in from nearly 20 yards out in the 33
rd minute. Her shot into the top right corner of the net, her eighth goal of the year, gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
This time the defenses were able to settle things down and the score stayed that way into the locker room. The Flyers held a 7-5 shot advantage in the half with
Cassie Glodowski making the game's only two saves to that point.
Becker had a chance to increase the lead in the 55
th minute but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and it was still, 2-1.
The bar would factor into the next score as the Flyers were able to tie it with 11 minutes left in regulation. Lewis' Fran Abate took a shot that also plunked the bar but Hadlock came in on the rebound to knock it into the net and make it 2-2.
Barsuli and Becker got shots in the final ten minutes but neither was able to put it on goal and the match headed to overtime.
Fortunately for the Rangers the first shot of the extra stanza found the net and gave Parkside its third overtime win in five matches. Becker fed Benson who found the top right corner of the net from ten yards away to end it clinching the three seed for UWP.
Statistically the match ended nearly even with both teams getting 12 shots. Glodowski finished with three saves in earning her 11
th victory of the season.
The Rangers will now prepare for the postseason and their opening round match with the Screaming Eagles. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie at UW-Parkside on October 9. The Rangers controlled play in the first meeting outshooting USI 31-10 overall but were unable to put the ball in the net thanks to 13 saves by Stephanie Bodamer.
Both teams will enter the contest on a hot streak. UW-Parkside is 6-0-2 in October. Southern Indiana, after a three game losing streak in late September have won three straight and are 6-1-1 since the turn of the calendar.
