Zarek, Lojeski shine in opener at St. Joe's

A four-game series was moved up a day due to threatening weather, as the Rangers and Pumas split on the baseball field in northwest Indiana Friday afternoon. Parkside won the first game, 11-3, and homestanding Saint Joseph's won the nightcap, 4-2.

In Saturday's action, the Pumas won a pair, 13-1 and 7-4.

In Friday's opener, Alex Zarek pitched all nine innings for the Rangers. The victorious hurler scattered eight hits while striking out three and walking zero. All three runs were earned.

At the plate Dave Lojeski got it done. He was a home run shy of the cycle in a 3-4 performance with a pair of runs scored. Lojeski has been on fire all season and his hitting at a staggering .420 clip.

In Friday's second game, Jack Olson pitched well in a loss. He worked six innings with four earned runs. He fanned four and did not walk a batter.

Parkside grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair in the fourth, only to have the Pumas pounce with three in the bottom half of the frame.

In Saturday's first game, Jon Kleinmeyer was chased with two outs in the second inning, after giving up nine runs. The Rangers were limited to two hits in the game.

In the fourth and final contest, Joel Bergmann took the loss. He gave up five earned runs in two-and-a-third innings. Michael Pena stayed hot, picking up two of the Rangers' five hits. Pena's batting average stands at a solid .353 on the season.

Saint Joseph's now has an overall record of 8-7 and a 4-2 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Parkside is 5-15 adn 1-7. 

The Rangers are scheduled to open the home season with a non-conference game with Upper Iowa Thursday, March 25. The game is doubtful due to recent snow. Scheduling updates will be posted when official.
