The Lewis University men's soccer team, sitting atop the 15-team Great Lakes Valley Conference, got all it could handle at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field on an uncharacteristically warm October afternoon on Friday. The Flyers did not lead until the scoreboard showed 10:01 left in the game, and that 3-2 margin held up.

The win moved the Flyers' record to 8-3-0 overall and 8-2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers leveled their overall record at 5-5-2. The team is 3-5-2 in conference action.

“We are not a 3-5-3 team in the league, but that's the facts,” said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke.

Armin Vrebac, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, came off the Flyer bench and made his presence felt by scoring a hat trick accounting for all of Lewis' goals.

Collin Monahan scored both Ranger goals. He opened the scoring at 38:13 with assists from Lucas Klees and Austin Robb. Parkside took a 2-1 lead when Monahan found the back of the net again at 43:15, with assists to Ben Kreple and Jason Moxley.

Like Vrebac, Monahan came off the bench to star in the contest. Vrebac's initial second half goal came at 55:43, setting the stage for his late hat trick.

Parkside put nine shots on goal. Lewis fired eight on net.

“At this point in the season, we have more questions than answers,” admitted Zitzke. “We need to find a way to win in this league.”

The Rangers look to jump on the winning side of their overall record when they host non-conference foe Robert Morris of Lake County Sunday, Oct. 10, beginning at noon.
