Tenth ranked Rangers win regular season home finale

Box Score

The UW-Parkside women's soccer team heads Northern Kentucky by a half game with two matches left to play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings. The Rangers ended the home portion of their schedule with a 4-0 win over Illinois-Springfield at Wood Road Field on Sunday.

Next up for the Rangers are games at Drury, Friday, Oct. 22, and at Rockhurst, Sunday, Oct. 24. A pair of wins would clinch first place and guaranteed home field throughout the eight-team conference tournament.

“We have to get ready for two big games on the road,” said UW-Parkside coach Troy Fabiano immediately after his team's win over the Prairie Stars.

It took the Rangers nearly 30 minutes to get on the scoreboard against Illinois-Springfield, a team which is now 2-12-0 overall and 2-11-0 in the GLVC. Megan Owens scored her third goal of the season assisted by Kristen Benson to get the ball rollin' for the Rangers.

The score stood at 1-0 at halftime.

“I think the Quincy game on Friday, (a key 1-0 win for the Rangers) took a lot out of us emotionally and we started out flat,” reasoned Fabiano.

The Rangers pulled away, scoring three goals in the second half, two by Benson and one from the leading scorer on the Rangers, Shannon Becker, who came up with her 15th goal of the season.

“We were able to create gaps by our ball movement in the second half,” explained Fabiano.

The Rangers fired 12 shots on goal. UWP netminder Cassie Glodowski turned back both Prairie Star shots.

The win gives the Rangers, a team ranked No. 10 in the nation, an overall record of 12-1-1. The lone loss was a 1-0 setback to Saginaw Valley State in the season opener. The team is an unbeaten 11-0-1 in the GLVC.
