The UW-Parkside men's soccer team ended the home portion of its 2010 season in style with a convincing 5-0 win over Illinois-Springfield at Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon. The Rangers jumped over the .500 mark at 7-6-2 overall, as they gun for their 31st consecutive winning season with two games left on the schedule, at Drury Friday, Oct. 22, and at Rockhurst Sunday, Oct. 24.
The Prairie Stars fell to 1-12-1 overall and 1-11-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside's league record stands at 4-6-2.
“This season hasn't gone the way our seniors would have liked, but it was great to end the home season with a win for them,” said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. “This group did everything we asked them to and they trained as hard as any group we've had.”
The Rangers gave the crowd a chance to get on their feet often, starting at the 20:51 mark when Jon Bebeau found the back of the net with an assist from Austin Robb. Bebeau tallied on a header nearly 5 minutes later for his seventh goal of the season and a 2-0 lead. It was assisted by Lucas Klees, who found Bebeau via corner kick.
Collin Monahan scored his fourth goal of the season at 34:19 to conclude the first half scoring. He was assisted by Kinkade Lo.
Cryil Simmons scored both second half goals for UW-Parkside. Bebeau assisted on the first tally and Robb and Lucas Klees helped on the final home goal of the 2010 season.
The Rangers fired 13 shots on goal. UW-Parkside goalkeeper Ryan Onwukwe turned away the only Prairie Star shot on net.
Late in the second half, the Ranger seniors including Matt Gloshen, Jason Moxley, Ben Kreple, Dave Mercer, Simmons and Bebeau were lifted from the game, leaving to a big ovation from an appreciative crowd.
“That was a nice moment, one I'm sure they'll remember for a long time,” said Zitzke. “Now it's time to finish strong on the road.”
