Rangers vault to 17-3 with a win at S&T

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team picked up its fifth win in a row on the road after defeating Missouri S&T, 57-48. The Rangers improved their overall record to 17-3 and hold a 9-2 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Miners stand at 10-9 overall and dropped to 5-6 in the GLVC.

The first half remained a close battle between the Rangers and Miners Saturday afternoon. There were six lead changes during the first half of the game and each team led by no more than six points.

The Rangers took the largest lead of the half at the 5:07 mark, leading the Miners, 22-16. The score stood at 27-22 at halftime.

The Rangers took control in the second half of the game, seizing a 12-point with lead just under 2 minutes played. The Rangers lead as many as 13 points with 6:51 left in the match.

The Miners scrambled back several minutes later, cutting the Ranger lead within five with just 1:45 left in the game. Brittany Hogen answered with a score underneath to put UWP back up by seven, as the visitors pulled away for good.

Two Rangers scored in double digits. Brittany Beyer led the Rangers in scoring with 20 points. Beyer was 6-6 at the free throw line and shot 7-14 from the field. Teammate Brittany Hogen had a stellar game logging another double-double, her third in the last three games. She knocked down 19 points and tallied 12 rebounds. Amanda Gibson led the team in assists with five and added eight points to her stat line.

The Rangers shot 43 percent for the game and held the Miners to just 34 percent. In addition, the Rangers shot 88 percent at the free throw line, making 15 out of 17 attempts.

The Rangers are at home for their next two games. The Rangers face the University of Southern Indiana on Thursday, January 28, at 5:30 p.m. and the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, January 30, at 1:00 p.m. in the DeSimone Gymnasium. The two opponents have a combined record of 34-4, the latter of which is 19-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation.
