Women suffer rare loss

Box Score

A poor start by the UW-Parkside women's basketball team was too much to overcome at Northern Kentucky Saturday afternoon as the Norse held on for a 62-60 victory.

The Rangers had an opportunity to send the game into overtime on its last possession, but failed as time expired.

The rare loss puts Parkside at 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Northern Kentucky is 10-6 overall and 4-3 in league action.

The Rangers missed 12 of its first 13 shots in the contest as a tough Northern Kentucky defense dug in. The Norse altered several shots and blocked 10 for the game. The home team played from the lead throughout the first half, taking a 30-25 lead at the break.

The Norse lead swelled to 14 points at 53-39 with 11:41 to go in the game. The Rangers then went to work. An 11-0 run pulled the team to within three points with 7:46 left.

The teams traded points until Northern Kentucky took the lead for good with 1:22 remaining. The only scoring the rest of the way was an NKU free throw.

Jadee Rooney led the Ranger charge with a game-high 18 points. Kristen Ruchti came off the bench to score a dozen points to go with four rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.

The Rangers will host nationally-ranked Quincy Monday, Jan. 18, in the DeSimone Gymnasium starting at 5:30 p.m.
