The Ranger women's soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a convincing 5-1 victory over Missouri S&T at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field Friday afternoon.

UW-Parkside, ranked No. 25 in the nation in NCAA II, jumped to 2-0-1 overall. The Miners dropped to 0-2 overall.

The Rangers scored first, 11:45 into the contest. Meredith Novak notched her third goal of the season with an assist from Becky Zirlin. Just 39 seconds later, Shannon Becker pumped in her third goal of the season with assists going to Natalie Brown and Kelly Teeters.

The lead jumped to 3-0 when Zirlin found the back of the net with an assist from Teeters.

“To get a result by the score we did showed we were ready to play,” explained UW-Parkside women's head coach Troy Fabiano. “It looked like a different team out there.”

The lone goal of the game for Missouri S&T was an own goal.

“This game was not as clean as we wanted it to be out of the back,” admitted the coach. “We still have some issues to take care of.”
Kelsey Krzyaniak came off the bench to open the second half scoring. She tallied with a double assist from Becker and Madison Pickett at 72:36. The scoring was capped off on Zirlin's third goal of the season, assisted by Krzyaniak and Novak at 74:51.

The Rangers have the league bye on Sunday. The team will return to action when it travels to GLVC newcomer Maryville Friday, Sept. 11.

“We are making progress,” summed up Fabiano. “We are moving forward rather than backward and that's always what you are looking for.”
