Nothing was decided in a hotly contested women's soccer game at Wood Road Field Friday afternoon. After 110 minutes, homestanding UW-Parkside and Southern Indiana fought to a 1-1 stalemate.
“This was a frustrating game,” admitted UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano. “It was an ugly tie.”
The win puts the 17th-ranked Rangers at 4-0-2 on the season. The squad is 2-0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Screaming Eagles are now 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the GLVC.
“USI has beaten nationally ranked Northern Kentucky and just tied 18th-ranked North Alabama on Wednesday,” noted Fabiano. “They are a good, physical team, that has endured a tough early schedule including two games against Division I opponents.”
Southern Indiana drew first blood in the contest, scoring at 55:31. Meagan Kempf scored her first goal of the year with an assist from Nancy Newcomer. Kempf had Ranger goalkeeper Cassie Glodowski one-on-one and beat her to the far side and low.
The Rangers answered back at 77:04. Freshman Madison Pickett came off the bench and found the back of the net with help from Shannon Becker. It was Pickett's second goal of the season. It came off of a corner kick in which Pickett found the ball among an array of players.
Each team had six shots on goal in the contest; however, the Rangers had 21 shot attempts compared to only a dozen for the Eagles.
“We created a lot of chances, but did not get the result,” added Fabiano.
UW-Parkside will play host to Kentucky Wesleyan in its next match, Sunday, Sept. 20, at noon. The Rangers have shutout the Panthers in eight consecutive games.
