The nation's fifth-ranked women's soccer team in NCAA Division II took to the field for the first time in the 2009 season. UW-Parkside, last year's Great Lakes Valley Conference champion and Midwest Region titlist, had to settle for a 1-1 tie against Concordia St. Paul Friday afternoon.
The game was moved to Ameche Field in Kenosha, due to unplayable grounds at UW-Parkside.
“We have a lot of kinks to work out,” said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano.
The Golden Bears jumped on the Rangers for a goal just 5:11 into the contest. Savannah Nolen tallied an unassisted goal, beating Parkside netminder Cassie Glodowski.
“It didn't help that they scored right away,” conceded Fabiano. “It became a difficult game the rest of the way.”
The Rangers salvaged the tie on a goal by senior All-American Meredith Novak. She scored off of a free kick at 26:41.
UW-Parkside put seven shots on goal compared to three by the Golden Bears.
“It was difficult playing conditions for both teams with the steady rain that was falling,” noted Fabiano. “We had some chances, but weren't able to finish it off.”
The Rangers return to action with a home match versus Minnesota State Moorhead Monday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m.
