The game wasn't played where it was supposed to be, not the same campus, nor the same time. Because of wet and unplayable conditions, UW-Parkside head men's soccer coach Rick Kilps spent a good part of Thursday morning on the phone trying to secure an alternate site for the match between his Rangers and Calumet College of St. Joseph's. Thanks to 11th-hour manuevering and the courtesy of Marquette University, the game was moved to a late 8:30 p.m. start on the Milwaukee campus.
Once it got down to soccer, it was all Rangers. The "home" team posted a 6-0 shutout over the Crimson Wave in the season opener for both teams.
Parkside proved dominant, out-shooting the Crimson Wave, 35-4, which includes a shot on goal count of 26-1. The turf field was tilted in favor of the Rangers each half, as the team tallied four in the first half and two in the second.
Johnson Thao had the first and last goal. Four others found the back of the net including Matt Gloshen, Niklas Boedts, Dennis Orellana and Cyril Simmons. Thao had a three-point game by adding an assist.
In goal, Jamie Lieberman made one save. Palani Apuakehau played in the final 14 minutes of the contest.
"It's a good start to our season," said Ranger associate head coach Jason Zitzke. "Defensively, we locked them down from the very beginning. We were making the extra pass. It was pretty clinical."
The opener came after a pair of impressive pre-season outings at Big 10 opponents. The Rangers battled Northwestern, a team which made it all the way to the Elite Eight last season, to a 2-2 stalemate. UWP fell at Wisconsin, 1-0, in overtime.
The Rangers have another off-campus "home" game Friday, Aug. 28, when they take on St. Francis on the campus of Kenosha Tremper High School.
