Summary Brackets
Junior Cody Zimmerman and freshman Dillon Bera earned individual championships at the annual UW-Stevens Point Wrestling Open Saturday. No team scores were kept at the event. The UWSP Open kicked off the 2009-2010 season.
Zimmerman, who is ranked No. 6 in the nation at 125 pounds, was 4-0 on the day. He started his day off with a 12-4 win, followed by a pinfall victory in 6:02. He made it to the finals with a convincing 16-2 triumph before shutting out Adam Sheley of UW-LaCrosse in the championship match, 4-0.
Bera, a 149-pounder making his first collegiate appearance, won his first bout, 17-2. He then won by pin in 55 seconds. His third match was an 11-3 winner followed by a 9-0 victory in the semi-finals. He topped Brady Schrupp of UW-LaCrosse in the finals, 10-4.
The Rangers had three second place finishes at Stevens Point.
Mike Migawa went 4-1 at 141 pounds. After a 14-3 win, he won his next two matches by pin in times of 1:51 and 5:27 respectively. He advanced through the semi-finals and lost a competitive 3-0 decision to Tico Baez of Rochester in the finals.
Luke Rynish was second at 174 pounds. He won by scores of 11-1, 8-3, 17-1 and 2-1 before bowing to Ben Jordan of UW-Madison in the finals.
Jon Treml was another Ranger runner up. The 197-pounder won by pin in 4:59, advanced on a forfeit and then won 7-2. He dropped a 4-1 decision to Andy Moore of UW-LaCrosse in the championship tilt.
Matt Gille (165), Ryan Woods (174) and Lucas Haag (184) placed third for Parkside.
