The end of another super season for the UW-Parkside men's soccer team came at Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon. The squad was hosting a Great Lakes Valley Conference quarterfinal contest.
Visiting Bellarmine earned a measure of revenge in beating the Rangers, 4-0. UW-Parkside had won at Bellarmine, 2-1, in the regular season.
This was the second consecutive season the Knights have gone on the road and have advanced beyond the quarterfinals.
“Bellarmine is always well-coached and they seem like they are ready to take that next step,” said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. “They dominated from beginning to end and there is no denying who the better team was today.”
The Knights move on with a 11-5-1 overall record. The Rangers end their season with a 13-5-2 mark.
Bellarmine scored two goals in the first half and picked up its third 3 minutes and 30 seconds into the second half. The Knights had goals from four different players including, in order, Justin Klenke, Jordan Dellamano, Bradley Barraclough and Robert Bowling.
Ranger goalkeeper Jamie Lieberman, playing in his last game as a Ranger, was credited with eight saves. Zane Reifsteck turned away both Parkside shots on goal.
Other seniors who suited up for the last time are Johnson Thao and Greg Fischer.
“The two seasons previous to this one were disappointing, but this year was fun all year long,” said Zitzke. “This is one of the hardest working group of guys we have had and it's just too bad they weren't rewarded for their efforts. We, the coaches, told them, after the game, that we respect everyone who put on the uniform this year.”
The Rangers have had a winning season each year dating back 1979, when it posted an 8-8-2 record. Head coach Rick Kilps has been at the helm since 1984.
