Box Score GLVC Brackets
On the last Great Lakes Valley Conference home game for three seniors, it was only fitting that all three were major contributors to UW-Parkside's 2-1 double overtime win over Drury.
A pair of seniors combined to set up the game-winning goal, which terminated the contest in the 104th minute. Becky Zirlin drilled one to the back of the net, set up by Meredith Novak. It was the sixth goal of the season for Zirlin.
The winning goal was scored in a 10-on-10 situation. Each team had a player pick up their second yellow card in overtime.
The remaining senior, Kelly Teeters, scored the first Ranger goal. It came at 7:22, off of a free kick by Novak.
“What a great day for the seniors,” said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabinao.
The win gave Parkside a 10-3-3 overall record and a 9-3-2 mark in the GLVC. Drury dropped to 13-5 overall and 10-4 in league play.
“It was a very physical game which was physically and mentally draining for both teams,” said Fabiano. “We talked about winning tight games at halftime and the girls came through. We created chances and were compact as a team defensively to restrict some of their forwards.”
After hosting a non-conference game with Robert Morris of Lake County Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 3:30 p.m., the Rangers will enter GLVC post season play. The team will play at Indianapolis, the fourth seed, in a quarterfinal match Sunday, Nov. 1. The Rangers, the fifth seed, will be out to defend their Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. Indianapolis defeated the Rangers, 1-0, at Parkside's Wood Road Field during the regular season, snapping a 3-year stretch in which the Rangers did not lose at home.
