Visiting Drury University showed why it is ranked No. 7 in the nation in men's soccer by beating UW-Parkside at Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon, 3-0.
The win by the Panthers elevates their lofty overall record to 16-1. The team ended Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 13-1 mark, with its only loss coming at the hands of Northern Kentucky, 2-1.
UW-Parkside is 13-4-2 overall and ended league play with an 8-4-2 mark. The Rangers will go into the GLVC tournament with the No. 4 seed and will host Bellarmine Sunday, Nov. 1, in a quarterfinal match at Wood Road Field. The match will kickoff at noon. The Rangers defeated Bellarmine in Louisville, 2-1, back on September 25.
The top four teams in the 15-team circuit will host quarterfinal games on Nov. 1. The quarterfinal winners will advance to the league's Final Four at the site of the highest remaining seed the following weekend.
Each team had eight shots on goal in the Drury tilt. Shot attempts stood at 15-14 in favor of the Panthers.
“We had the three opportunities to play elite programs this year (Drury, Lewis and Northern Kentucky) and we failed to win each time,” noted UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. “One of our goals was to reach the next level. We're not there yet.”
Drury's Micha Whorton scored his 13th goal of the year at 18:41, followed by two more goals in the first half. Andrew Bordelon tallied at 30:33 followed by a Adam Peterson goal at 34:03.
“Drury is the best team we have played so far,” said Zitzke.
Note: The added match with Robert Morris of Lake County which was scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, has been called off.
