UW-Parkside and Lewis renewed their rivalry on the men's soccer field Sunday afternoon, this time on the Flyers home turf in Romeoville, Illinois.
The homestanding Flyers scored a 2-0 win over their guests.
Lewis set the pace early, scoring just 2 minutes and 5 seconds into the match. The team also scored at the end of the half, at 40:15, to take a 2-0 advantage into the lockerroom at halftime.
"Giving up a goal at the 2-minute mark puts you in an uphill struggle," said UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. "A late goal to end the half buries you deeper."
Nestar Hernandez scored both of the Flyer goals. The first was off of a rebound and the second was on a break-a-way.
"Ironically, if you take away those two defensive miscues, we played a very good game," noted Kilps. "That may sound ridiculous, but you needed to witness the game to understand. We took the game to them for a large majority of the game. We continued to push forward until the final whistle."
The Flyers had six shots on goal in the game. The Rangers had a comparable five shots on net. Shot attempts were fairly even as well, as the Rangers fired 14 shots, while the Flyers attempted to score 13 times.
Corner kicks were well in favor of the visitors. UW-Parkside had 11 corner kicks, while the Flyers did not have a single attempt.
"It's a game where we needed to put something in the back of the net and we did not accomplish that," added Kilps.
Lewis is 9-3-1 overall and 8-3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference after the win. The Rangers are 10-3-2 overall and 5-3-2 in league play.
There are now only four matches left in GLVC play. The Rangers head down the stretch, looking to host a first round GLVC tournament game (which goes to each of the top four teams in the 15-team circuit). The squad will play at league newcomer Illinois-Springfield Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
