UW-Parkside had little trouble in elevating its dual meet record to 9-5 after a convincing 39-3 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a dual wrestling meet held at the DeSimone Gymnasium Wednesday night. It was the final home event of the season for the Rangers, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II.
Craig Becker, ranked No. 1 in the country in NCAA Division II at the 149-pound level, upped his perfect record to 21-0 after cruising to a 17-1 victory over Morgan Sickinger.
“Craig looked like the No. 1 wrestler in his weight class tonight,” said UW-Parkside head coach Jim Koch.
Cody Zimmerman improved on his outstanding record at 125 pounds and is now 37-5. He decisioned Carl DeLuca, 9-1.
Corey VanGroll is 33-5 at 165 pounds after a 7-1 win over James Dederich and Luke Rynish picked up his 30th win on the season versus 11 losses with a 4-1 win over Sam Engelland.
Zimmerman has the most wins of any wrestler in NCAA Division II and VanGroll is second. Rynish's win total is seventh.
“I was very pleased with how our team wrestled tonight,” said Koch. “It was VanGroll's last match at UW-Parkside and the team wanted to make sure he went out with an outstanding team performance.”
UW-Oshkosh dropped to 6-5 in dual meets.
Next up for the Rangers is the Wheaton College Invitational Friday-Saturday, Jan. 30-31. Wrestling begins at 2 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
