UW-P women in playoffs; top Bellarmine

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team will be a participant in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, thanks in part to a 65-58 win over Bellarmine. The final game on the regular season schedule was played at UW-Parkside's DeSimone Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers led by 17 points late in the first half. The home squad headed the Knights by as many as 18 in the second half. UW-Parkside led, 38-20, with 18 minutes to go in the game.

Bellarmine mounted a comeback, getting to within two at 55-53 with 3:42 to go in the game. A three-pointer by Amanda Gibson and a pair of free throws from Kayla Ming put the Rangers up, 60-53 with 2:32 to go.

The Knights pulled to within four with 1:49 to go, before Katie Weiglein nailed a clutch three-point shot with 1:21 showing on the clock. The Rangers put the game away when Allison Smaglik got loose under the basket for a lay-in.

Ming led the Ranger scoring effort with 20 points. Amanda Gibson scored 19 points and dished out eight assists.

UW-Parkside ends regular season play with a 17-10 record, improving on last year's mark by two games. The Rangers finished at 12-7 in conference play.

The Rangers will travel to Drury to take on the Panthers Tuesday, March 4, starting at 5:45 p.m. The game will air live on WRJN 1400AM and on the internet. Pull down 'Game Day' and then go to 'Live Audio.'
