A pair of champs, two second place finishers at St. Cloud State's Husky Open

A trip to St. Cloud, Minnesota, produced a pair of champions and two runner-ups at St. Cloud State's Husky Open Saturday. Cody Zimmerman and Craig Becker were crowned champion of their respective weight class, while Corey VanGroll and Lucas Haag brought back second place honors.

No team scores were kept at the event.

Zimmerman upped his record to 21-3 in winning the 125-pound grouping. He started the day off with a first-round pin in 2:42, before winning by decisions of 6-1 and 9-2. He won the championship match by a 10-5 count.

Becker has won all eight of his matches so far this season. He picked up a bye in the first round  of the 149-pound class at St. Cloud, then won decisively by a score of 16-2. His closest match came next, a 4-3 victory. He closed out the semi-finals and finals with pins in 4:41 and 4:11.

VanGroll finished in second place at 165 pounds. He drew a bye in the first round, then won by a wide margins of 16-4 and 12-3. He captured a tight 2-0 decision in the semi finals before falling to Tad Merritt of host St. Cloud State, 7-2, in the championship bout. VanGroll is now 21-4 on the season.

Also finishing in second place was Haag, at 184 pounds. He picked up a bye in the first round then won by pin in his first action, at 6:58. He went on to win by scores of 9-2 and 14-4, setting up the championship match versus Luke Munkelwitz of St. Cloud State. Munkelwitz triumphed, 5-2. Ranger Curtis Hines finished fifth in the weight group.

The Rangers, ranked No. 17 in the country in NCAA Division II, will not return to action until after the New Year. The team will participate in the annual Midwest Open, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 3-4.
