Rangers throw scare into Timberwolves

Box Score

The Northwood University women's basketball team posted 18 wins last season, barely missing the NCAA tournament, and have its three top scorers back from a season ago. The team was off to a 2-0 start this season coming into a game with the Rangers, having outscored its opponents by an average of 56 points per game.

The Rangers led at halftime, 32-29, but could not hold off the second half charge of the Timberwolves as Northwood forged a 68-57 victory. The loss drops the Ranger record to 0-4.

The non-conference game was played in Midland, Michigan, Tuesday evening.

UW-Parkside shot 14-20 in the first half, yet had 16 turnovers. The team did not shoot a free throw in the first half. Northwood had twice as many shot attempts, 40, in a unusual statistical first half.

The Rangers handled the ball much better in the second half, turning the ball over only six times.

The game was tied at 21-21 just 10 minutes into the contest, before defenses grew stronger.

Jodi Ostergren of Northwood led all scorers with 22 points. Megan Starnes had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Amanda Gibson paced the Ranger effort on the scoresheet with 13 points. True freshmen Jadee Rooney had 13 points and Brittany Beyer played through foul trouble and tallied 10 points.

The Rangers out-rebounded the home team, 40-34.

After four games away from home, the Rangers will host a game Thursday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. It will not only be the home opener, but the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, as Kentucky Wesleyan visits the DeSimone Gymnasium.
