It came down to the final match of the evening in the battle for the Sake Bottle at UW-Parkside's DeSimone Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Rangers and UW-Whitewater were tied at 17-17 in a dual meet.
Freshman Nick Mayenschein scored a convincing 8-1 win over Corey Schmidt to give the Rangers the win, 20-17, and keep possession of the Sake Bottle.
“It was his first collegiate dual meet and he came up huge,” said UW-Parkside head coach Jim Koch.
The Sake Bottle is a traveling trophy which goes to the winner of the UW-Parkside versus UW-Whitewater dual. The Sake Bottle was given to Koch and then UW-Whitewater coach Willie Myers by the president of Japanese Wrestling when the pair coached an NAIA All-State team which toured Japan and Korea in 1975. UW-Parkside now leads the series, 17-4.
“We knew coming into the meet that it would be very tight,” said Koch. “We knew each team could win five matches. Winning the first three matches set the tone and Cody Zimmerman's win was key.”
UW-Whitewater was ranked No. 8 in the nation in the pre-season NCAA Division III poll.
