Women sweep road trip

Box Score

A sweep on the road was completed by the UW-Parkside women's basketball team Saturday afternoon. The team toppled homestanding Kentucky Wesleyan College, 80-56. This after the Rangers won at Southern Indiana two days prior.

Kayla Ming starred in Owensboro Saturday. She scored underneath, from behind the arc and at the free throw line in amassing a career-high 32 points. The senior was 11-16 from the floor including a 6-9 effort from three-point land. Ming was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. She added four assist and four steals to her impressive stat line.

Ming tallied 22 points by halftime, sending the Rangers into the lockerroom with a 42-27 lead.

The halftime margin did not come easily. Kentucky Wesleyan held a 19-17 advantage with just under 9 minutes to go in the first set of 20 minutes. The Rangers then went on a 19-3 tear, turning the contest in their favor.

Kentucky Wesleyan could not get the game back to single digits at any point after that. The Rangers took a 20-point lead with 14 minutes left in the game and led by 27 at its largest margin.

“It was a great weekend for us to come away with wins at places we have not traditionally played well at,” said UW-Parkside assistant coach Brad Fischer. “Our girls, one through 12, did everything we asked them to do from game preparation to execution.”

Ming was joined by point-guard Amanda Gibson in double figures. The sophomore added 19 points to the Ranger total. She dished out six assists as well.

UW-Parkside shot an even 50 percent from the floor for the game. The team stayed hot at the free throw line, making good on 21 of 24 charity shots.

The victory pushed the Ranger win total to double digits. The team is 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Panthers dropped to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Up next for the Rangers is a home date with Missouri S&T. That game will take place at the DeSimone Gymnasium Thursday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m. Pull down on 'Game Day' on the upper right hand portion of this website to listen, view or follow live stats.
