After 108 minutes and 32 seconds of scoreless soccer, visiting Missouri-Rolla was whistled for a handball in the box. Ranger All-American Bojan Jovicic (Milwaukee, Wis.) stepped up for the ensuing penalty kick and make no mistake as UW-Parkside pulled out a 1-0 double overtime victory over the Miners.
The win was the first for the Rangers in three tries in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The squad is now 5-2 overall. Missouril Rolla slipped to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
"We played real nice soccer in our two losses on the road last week," said UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. "Today was kind of ugly, but we got the result."
Missouri-Rolla put two shots on net against Ranger netminder Jamie Lieberman (Racine, Wis.). Those were the only shots the Miners could muster in the contest.
UW-Parkside had three shots on goal.
"We perservered," said a relieved Ranger head coach Rick Kilps. "In the second half, Rolla didn't attack very much. Our possession was there, but our offensive execution was not."
The coach had special praise for Dennis Orellana (Kenosha, Wis.), who came off the bench. "I thought he had a real nice game," commented Kilps.
The Rangers will host Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Tritons fell at Lewis in the 108th minute on Friday.
