A hat trick by Johnson Thao represented only a third of the scoring as the UW-Parkside men's soccer team hammered visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph's, 9-0, Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference match was played at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field. The win lifted the Ranger record to 2-0 on the young season.
The Crimson Wave play in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and are an NAIA affiliate.
Thao scored the second, fifth and seventh goals for the Rangers. His cousin, Tim, scored the first and third goals.
"Tim Thao has really stepped up his game," noted UW-Parkside associate head coach Jason Zitzke. "He is a skillful intelligent defender."
Last year's first-team All-American, Bojan Jovicic, made sure he got into the act, scoring a goal and assisting on three others. His brother, Zoran, notched a goal as well and assisted on another.
Other goal scorers were Jose Alfaro and Lorne Cameron.
"The chemistry for some of our attacking players is starting to develop," noted Zitzke. "But, we still need to get better."
The Rangers led 4-0 at halftime.
"We missed tons of shots at the beginning of the game," noted Zitzke. "We left room for improvement."
UW-Parkside put 15 shots on goal and had 33 attempts for the game. Ranger netminder Victor Perez turned away one shot, which was the first shot on goal of the game.
The Rangers will host a pair of games at Wood Road Field over the weekend. The team will take on Viterbo Saturday, Sept. 1, and then battle the
University of
Mary, Monday, Sept. 3. Viterbo and Mary will face each other at Wood Road Field on Sunday, Sept. 2. All games begin at noon.
"We have to iron out some of our mis-communications in the next couple of non-conference games," said Zitzke.
