Defense keys Ranger win

One goal was all the UW-Parkside women's soccer team needed in a 1-0 blanking of visiting Drury Sunday afternoon. The Great Lakes Valley Conference clash was contested at UW-Parkside's Wood Road Field with a steady rain throughout.

"It was a good team effort for us defensively," said UW-Parkside head coach Troy Fabiano. "Drury never threatened."

The lone goal was scored by Amanda VandenAvond (Green Bay, Wis.) at 43:32. It was assisted by Meredith Novak (Batavia, Ill.).

Ranger goalkeeper Erica Higuchi (Norcross, Geo.) turned away three Drury shots on goal in preserving the win and the shutout. UW-Parkside put six shots on net.

"At this time of the year you want to be playing your best soccer," reasoned Fabiano. "We played two of our best games of the year this weekend."

The coach addressed the wet conditions with his team before the game. "I told the players to follow everything because of the slick surface, said the coach.

The Rangers have one more GLVC game left, at Lewis, Thursday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m., before concluding regular season play with a non-conference match versus Ferris State Sunday, Oct. 21, at noon, at Wood Road Field.

"This win helps us stay in the hunt in the conference tournament mix," said Fabiano.
