WATERLOO, Iowa. (Feb. 24, 2013)-- The 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside wrestling squad qualified four individuals for the NCAA Division II Championships and placed sixth overall at the 13-team NCAA Division II Super Regional 3, hosted by Upper Iowa University at Young Arena.
Dillon Bera and
James Malechek will return to nationals for the second consecutive season while
Josh Anthony and
Davien Willis will make their first appearance at the national meet.
The Rangers tallied 70.5 points to secure sixth place in the Super Regional that featured six nationally-ranked squads. Top-ranked Saint Cloud State University won the regional title with 140.5 points and four individual champions while host and No. 6 Upper Iowa took second billing with 95.5 points. Eighth-ranked Minnesota State University was third with 84.5 points followed by the No. 16 University of Indianapolis (72.5 points) and Maryville University (72.5 points).
Dillon Bera placed fourth in the 157-pound weight class, securing a return to the national championships. The senior entered the regional ranked No. 1 in the nation but was upset 4-1 by Colton Dutz of Newman University in the opening round. Bera regrouped with four straight wins before falling in the third place match 10-3 to Upper Iowa's Bryce Lumzy.
Josh Anthony punched his ticket to nationals with a fourth place showing at 174-pounds. The freshman received an opening round bye before downing top-seeded Brendan Eichmann of Minnesota State 9-2 in the semifinals. Anthony faltered 7-3 to Southwest Minnesota State University's Kyle Begin before defeating Shelby Mappes of UIndy to secure a spot at nationals.
Davien Willis won his first two matches of the day at 197-pounds, pinning Joe Johnson of Minot State University before blanking UIndy's Taylor Scott 5-0 in the quarterfinals. The sophomore stumbled 3-2 to top seed Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa in the semis before edging Saint Cloud State's Chris Brassell 2-1 to secure fourth place and make his first trip to nationals.
James Malechek returns to the national championships after logging a third place showing at 285-pounds. The senior enjoyed an opening round bye before winning by tech fall over Minot State's Bob Bartz in the second round. Malechek suffered a 3-0 defeat in the semifinals before rebounding with a pair of wins to secure third. The 285-pounder shutout Minnesota State's Corby Running 7-0 before pinning UIndy's Evan Wooding in 6 minutes and 25 seconds in the third place match.
UW-Parkside claimed three sixth-place finishers in Dan Argueta at 149,
Nick Fishback at 165 and
Matt Gille at 184.
The Rangers' four qualifiers will return to the mat on Friday, March 8 for day one of the NCAA Division II National Championships held in Birmingham, Ala.
