ALLENDALE, Mich. (Nov. 16, 2012)-- Something had to give on Friday night as regional powerhouses University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Grand Valley State University met on the soccer pitch in the third round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship. The third-ranked Lakers utilized a pair of first half goals to emerge with the 2-0 victory, extending their unbeaten run to 51 games at the GVSU Soccer Field.

The Lakers (20-1-2) drew first blood in the Midwest Region Final off a corner kick in the 20th minute with Erin Hilbert scoring a header goal off a feed from Taylor Callen. Ashley Botts doubled the home side's advantage 12 minutes later, converting a penalty kick after the Rangers' (14-5-1) tackled a GVSU attacker inside the box.

Grand Valley State enjoyed a two goal lead at the halftime intermission, holding an 8-1 advantage in shots including all seven on frame.

The two squads battled to a scoreless second 45 minutes of play. UWP held a 7-6 edge in shots during the second half while GVSU held a 4-2 advantage on shots on goal.

Jasmine Espino accounted for two of the Rangers' four shots on goal, while Ashley Meyer and Brynn Darga each tallied a shot on frame.

UW-Parkside goalkeeper Michelle Girard turned away seven shots in 90 minutes of work while GVSU's Parise Chelsea earns the victory, stopping all four UWP shots on target to pick up the clean sheet, her 15th of the season and the 18th for the team.

This is the third consecutive season the Rangers season has ended at the hands of GVSU, falling to the Lakers in the third round in 2010 and the second round in 2011.

The Lakers advance to the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. taking on Central Region Champion Minnesota State University-Mankato (17-1-3) after the Mavericks advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 deadlock after two overtimes against the University of Central Missouri (16-2-4).

The Rangers began their 2012 NCAA Tournament run by blanking No. 22 William Jewell College 2-0 in the opening round on Nov. 9 before downing host and No. 13 Quincy University, 2-1, on Nov. 11.

The game capped off stellar careers for seniors Crystal Chalery, Brynn Darga, Alex Hauser and Madison Pickett. The foursome posted a career record of 54-16-8 over the past four seasons while Lauki'i Cheng and Megan Owens close their career with a mark of 61-13-7 (2008, 2010-2012), making four trips to the NCAA Tournament while winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship as freshmen in 2008.

This was the Rangers' sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the third trip in as many years. UW-Parkside previously qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004 and 2003. The Rangers advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008 while advancing past the opening round in every appearance since 2003.
